Operating System and Browser Configuration of Cloudmersive Forward Proxy
9/15/2022 - Cloudmersive Support

Once your Cloudmersive Forward Proxy is deployed, you will need to configure your operating system and/or browser to use it.

There are two key steps:

  1. Setting the proxy settings (described here)
  2. Installing the Self-Signed Root Certificate Authority Certificate (if you wish to protect SSL traffic with security policies through SSL Bumping)

Windows and Windows Server OS-Level Configuration

You can configure a default proxy in Windows and Windows Server at the OS level as follows:

Click the Start button, then select Settings > Network & internet > Proxy. Under Manual proxy setup, next to Use a proxy server, select Set up. In the Edit proxy server dialog box, perform the following:
Turn on Use a proxy server. In the Proxy IP address and Port boxes, enter the proxy server name or IP address and port (optional) in the respective boxes for your Cloudmersive Forward Proxy endpoint. Choose or clear the Don’t use the proxy server for local (intranet) addresses check box.
We recommend you select this check box unless your organization requires the proxy server to be used for intranet addresses. Select Save.
Restart your computer or server to fully apply the change.

Ubuntu 18.04 Linux OS-Level Configuration

  1. Open your bash profile file in a text editor:
vi ~/.bash_profile
  1. Add the following lines, modifying them to match your environment:
export http_proxy=proxyhost.com:8080
export https_proxy=proxyhost.com:8080

Be sure to specify the correct host name and port(s) for your endpoint.

Restart your computer.

Microsoft Edge

The Microsoft Edge browser network stack uses the system network settings by default. These settings include proxy settings, and certificate and private key stores.

Firefox

Click on Menu > Settings. In the Find in Settings box type Proxy and then click on Settings.... Either choose Use system proxy settings to use the OS settings, or choose Manual proxy configuration. Under HTTP Proxy, enter the host name and port of your Cloudmersive Forward Proxy endpoint. Click on Also use this proxy for HTTPS and choose OK. Restart Firefox.

Google Chrome

Google Chrome will by default use the system network settings including proxy settings.
